There are no tea bags or tea pots required for drinking mate. Instead, a specially manufactured mate straw, called "bomba" or "bombilla", is required. It is a stainless steel straw with a filter attached to the bottom and it sieves out the herb as you sip from it. *for your information, mate can also be prepared in a coffee plunger (French Press).
The infusion is usually brewed in a cup made from calabash but these days mate cups come in all sorts of material such as wood, horn, ceramic, metal and silicon.
